Back to Work After the Holidays

After every long break the first week back has always been a struggle for me. Having a couple weeks away from work is great for so many reasons, but when it’s time to get back into a normal routine I always find it difficult to adjust to my normal lifestyle and snap back into production. Going from busy social schedules, time with family and friends, and endless food and drinks can leave me feeling pretty lonely when it’s time to get back to work, especially when work is remote like it is now. If you are feeling this way, first off, you’re not alone, and secondly there are some great ways to combat the blues that come with January! Here are some helpful tips that I have put into practice that might be helpful for you to kick it back into gear this year and feel your normal self again!

Start Slow

In this first week back to work, don’t be too hard on yourself. It is okay to ease back in slowly. Take breaks as you need to and don’t expect to knock out your whole task list. Pick out the things that need done the soonest and chip away at those.

Put Plans on the Calendar

One major driver of post Holiday depression for me is that I go from so many holiday plans and celebrations right into an empty calendar in January. Put a few things on the calendar over the next few weeks so that you have stuff to look forward to. Even if it’s just a Zoom happy hour with friends, or a short hike, make plans now that you can look forward to!

Talk to Someone

Especially during the pandemic, it is easy to go all day without talking to a single person. Make sure that you take the time to reconnect with colleagues, or even friends as you make your way back to a normal routine. And remember that you are not alone! There are all sorts of people and resources to connect with during these times of isolation.

Take a Walk

This is my absolute favorite thing to do as a short break during the work day. I love to get my body moving and give my hands a break from the stress of the keyboard. This is also a great time to think and even jot down new work ideas as you free up mental space. Some of my best ideas come to me when I’m halfway around the block and removed from the screen.

Check Your Goals

It’s no secret that most people aren’t able to follow through with their new year resolutions. Strava reports that as soon January 12th, fitness trends that start with the new year already begin to decline. Check your goals and make sure that they are realistic and that you have a good plan to achieve them. Maybe this means approaching goals on a seasonal basis that is more manageable instead setting them yearly. You have everyday this year to work on yourself and there’s no reason to rush into impossible goals. I’d even recommend sharing goals with close family or friends to keep you accountable.

Have an Awesome Year!

As cliche as it sounds let’s have an awesome year together. Despite all the struggles that came with 2020 and continue to play out, there has never been a better time to smile and be grateful for all that we have! Let’s attack the year with a positive outlook and continue to kick-ass in all the ways that we aspire to!

NEED A BREAK IN THE ACTION?

Let's schedule a coffee date, virtually of course.
